St. Donat's Church in Zadar

This is one of the most famous churches in Croatia. It was built in the 9th (ninth) century and it is symbol of the town of Zadar and due to its' peculiar shape it is special in Europe as well - being the representative of pre-romanesque architecture style.

St. Donat owns its' name to Zadar's bishop Donat and it was originally named and dedicated to the holy Trinity and the name of St. Donat came in the 15th century.
St. Donat has fantastic acustic characteristics and that's why there's over four decade old tradition of Musical Evenings in st. Donat, Zadar.

All in all - few more notes about Croatia and a little contribution to My World Tuesday! Be sure to check them all!

It's interesting to see the curved wall. I wonder why they built it that way. Love the arched windows.

I was just in an older part of Baltimore, Maryland and it really struck me how the neighborhoods are build around the churches: every other block corner has one. I am sure that is particularly the case in tightly settled and older parts of Croatia.

The gulls befoul the roof but make very scenic weather vanes. Two beautiful summer shots.
